The Need is Still Great – Calling for Additional Donations, Volunteers, and Help
ST. LOUIS, MO (May 23, 2025) – Individuals, families, and communities still need help one week after the May 16th severe storms and tornadoes struck the St. Louis region, destroying local homes and businesses. The United Way of Greater St. Louis (UWGSL) 211 team continues to operate in disaster response mode, ensuring affected neighbors are accessing available and emerging resources through 211, including shelters, hotels, and supplies.
211 has received and connected more than 1,300 disaster calls for assistance since the storm hit multiple St. Louis communities. Residents still in need of support are encouraged to call 211 or visit 211helps.org for assistance and to access information and daily updates on disaster-related resources.
The UWGSL Volunteer Center has already connected more than 2,500 volunteers with local disaster relief opportunities. Individuals looking to help can sign up at stlvolunteer.org/disaster.
To further aid recovery efforts, UWGSL has activated a Storm Relief Fund, which supports food, shelter, and cleanup initiatives in partnership with the Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD). Every dollar raised goes directly in support of residents affected by the storms. Donations can be made at helpingpeople.org/stormrelief.
“We have been deeply grateful to see so many local community members coming together to help our neighbors,” said Michelle D. Tucker, President and CEO of United Way of Greater St. Louis. “Countless individuals, companies, nonprofits, and others have stepped up, and their collective efforts have been vital to the immediate response to the storm. But this is just the beginning. We are asking for continued support — both now and in the long term. United Way is here for our community. We will overcome this, but it will take all of us working together.”
So far, donations to the United Way Storm Relief Fund are currently supporting food, shelter, and cleanup initiatives administered by disaster-related partners. These are the vital supports needed within the first hours and weeks of a disaster. We have already released up to $350,000 to address these immediate needs as identified through centralized disaster coordination efforts and assessments.
